Neighbors Helping Neighbors have a Brighter Christmas

     Seeking Donors and Requests

The purpose of the Neighbors Helping Neighbors have a “Brighter Christmas” is to make the community
aware of special needs that are usually not addressed by existing service agencies. Thanks to the
generosity and kindness of Randolph County citizens, many people have received assistance over the years
through this program. During this holiday season we are looking to serve folks of our community just as
Brighter Christmas Fund has for many years. We are now taking applications for this year’s Neighbors
    Helping Neighbors season!
Neighbors Helping Neighbors have a “Brighter Christmas” is directed by a committee of service
professionals. These volunteers represent many organizations including, The Randolph HUB, Randolph
County Senior Adults Association, Randolph County Habitat for Humanity, Randolph County Veterans
Council, Christians United Outreach Center and At-Large Community Members.
Donors - You can meet these needs by donating:
    1) By credit card, call or come to CUOC OR use the website www.mycuoc.org click on “give back”,
“sponsor, then select under sponsor “Neighbors Helping Neighbors Project”. Please put the case
number you are donating to in the notes section.
    2) Specific goods or providing the services requested. Please call CUOC at 336-625-1500 ext. 222.
You may leave your name and a working number along with the # of the request you would like to
    provide assistance for.
    3) Mail a check to CUOC / Neighbors Helping Neighbors, PO Box 784 Asheboro, NC 27204. Specify
a specific request # or state “where needed” on the memo line of their check.

To apply: The average NHN request is $250 - $500. Please do not submit NHN requests for rent, utilities,
Christmas gifts, or things where programs are already in place to meet those needs.
    1) Go to www.mycuoc.org click on the Neighbors Helping Neighbors link, print the application and
complete or send a letter stating the information the application requests.
    2) If you want an application mailed, call 336-625-1500 x 222 and leave your name and address.
We will mail the application to you.

When a letter is received, the committee will review each request and determine which member is most
appropriate to be assigned as the lead person. The committee will meet each week to review the progress of
each request and its findings. The identity of the applicants, unless consent is given, will remain confidential.
The Randolph HUB will publish stories based on applicant letters to show potential donors what special
needs exist in the community and how the needs should best be met. Applicants will be informed in writing of
the committee’s recommendations as soon as possible. If requests are found to be unsuitable, efforts will be
made to refer the information to the appropriate human services agency.

    Celebrating 25 Years

Celebrate 25 Years of Serving Randolph County with us!

CUOC serves all of Randolph County with services for family in financial crisis. Services include: a food pantry including remote food distributions to nine locations away from our building to families and individuals who may not be able to come into Asheboro to get the food they need.  Typically, each household receives enough food to last one week; medical assistance by loaning various types of medical equipment for as long as someone may need it, assisting with emergency needs for life sustaining medications, and assistance with research and completing paperwork required to apply for on-going RX needs through indigent pharmacy programs. We operating a Neighbors Helping Neighbors program that helps elderly, poverty and disabled families receive help with minor car and home repairs so they can remain independent as well as other basic needs not covered by other local programs. CUOC helps with utility, rent, and mortgage payments when people are in crisis due to circumstances outside their control. Through our voucher programs we help with clothing for children and adults when they can’t afford to purchase them, and, household and furniture items when a family is able to go from homelessness to rental property, has had to flee domestic violence, or has to move for reasons outside their control and other crisis situations. We offer financial literacy training open to our clients and the general public. In addition to the "normal" areas of assistance, it would not be out of the ordinary for us to purchase work boots so someone can start a new job, pay for a final exam when a student has a promise of a job once they take the final exam, or to provide a gas voucher so someone can get to work until they receive their first paycheck.  CUOC does provide assistance to the homeless providing emergency shelter and transitional housing for single parent homeless families through Project Independence and an occasional "bus ticket home" or shelter referral for single adults.

In our 25 years of service 32,467 Randolph County families have received help at least once while in financial crisis.  Some of our families in poverty will and do get help on a monthly basis if they don’t have the income to provide food for themselves or their families.  We touch lives over 25,000 times each year which means someone has food for a week, someone has utilities for a month, someone receives financial literacy training for a lifetime, someone receives homeless assistance for a "season" of their lives and when all is said and done, in a year at least 25,000 times, someone has had help they need! We use between 22,000 – 25,000 volunteer hours each year to support our programs.

To celebrate all CUOC has accomplished in the past 25 years, and to say thank you to our donors, voluteers, shoppers, and employees, we will host a party in downtown Asheboro in Bicennial Park on Saturday, September 7th from 2pm to 6pm. Donors and voluteers are welcome to RSVP to patticuoc@triad.rr.com before Aug. 30, 2019 at noon to secure a ticket for Lexington BBQ meal. Games, entertainment, and fun for all ages. Bring your own chair.
